Topic: SONET Add/Drop and Protection Switching
- Investigate and summarize the availability of SONET add/drop multiplexing equipment (including interface cards in
switching and routing equipment)
- Report on the use of SONET on fiber rings (as opposed to point-to-point links)
- Report on how a fiber ring can be used to protect against a single cable cut
- How much capacity must be reserved for protection, and how is overall capacity ususally controlled
- What are the standards for the automated rerouting of capacity, e.g. how fast is the restoration?
- How can the ring be protected against the loss of one switching office on the ring?
Focus on standards, procedures, and practices rather than specific manufacturers' equipment. That said, product/equipment specifications and descriptions can be valuable sources of information.
You also need to be specific about how protection switching is done, not just how it could be done; here
it will be very helpful to look at manufacturer sites.
