• Review the slides on Cellular Communications and make sure that you can define major components and functions in a cellular system
• Chapter 5, Frame relay: Review your notes regarding the concept of virtual circuit switching; what service guarantees does Frame Relay offer; what is the main use of Frame Relay in the network.
• Chapter 5, DSL: Review the table on Pages 260-261 and look for the range of distances and speeds offered; how is distance and speed related; how is DSL service delivered to the customer, what devices are needed; what are the main applications of DSL.
• Chapter 5, ATM: what are unique attributes of ATM service; why can ATM offer high data rates; what quality of service categories are available in ATM; what are the main uses of ATM.
• Chapter 5 SONET: check your notes on the frame structure, frame rate, and overhead types; look at the table on pages 280/281 and compare the OC- and STM- designations, how are they related; what is the purpose of SONET in the network (you will need your notes for this).
• Chapter 8: what are the basic components of a cellular network; what are the different standards used in cellular networks; what are the "generations" of cellular networks and what distinguishes each new generation from the previous one; look at the cell structure on page 421; pay attention to the description of signaling on page 423 and number portability on page 425; look at the discussion of roaming on page 427/428; what are the 911 service issues; what are the options for carriers to go to 3rd generation systems.
