The Academic Calendar and System Committee was charged with looking at both the calendar (the dates when we start and stop and take breaks) and the system (quarters versus semesters).  The committee  researched the issues involved, gathered input from all across the University, and submitted its recommendation to the President in June 2007.

The Committee, in its deliberations, was guided by specific guidelines and principles.  The are listed here:  GUIDELINES AND PRINCIPLES.

There are several options when it comes to the calendar.  It is possible in the quarter system to begin and end earlier in the year, or to begin and later in the year and have a shorter winter break.  There are also options in the semester system.  Most institutions on semesters do the early semester options; a few do late semesters.  Examples of all of these can be downloaded here:  SAMPLE CALENDARS.
