Q2S Transition for ITS Students
The academic year 2011-2012 is the last year of quarters. OU, and
the McClure School, have made a commitment to not have the transition
to Semesters delay your graduation, as long as you work with us to
make that happen! That means you really, really need to see your ITS
advisor, and follow his or her advice.
Schedule and Expectations
- Fall Quarter Preparation Sessions -- attend an information
session led by an advising assistant to prepare for your meeting
with your faculty advisor.
- Fall Quarter Advising -- Your faculty advisor
will announce times when you can schedule an advising appointment.
During your appointment you and your advisor will review the equivalency lists below
to catalog courses you still need to take, and prioritize courses to
complete in the last two quarters.
- Winter Quarter Preparation Sessions -- attend a
group session led by an advising assistant to prepare a first draft
of your Transition Degree Completion Plan (TDCP).
- Winter Quarter Advising -- Schedule a meeting
with your advisor to complete and file the TDCP
General Rules
Disclaimer: This section is based on our best judgement and
information contained in guidelines that exist to date only in draft
form. They are still subject to change.
- Catalog of Entry
- The rule remains that you can rely on the
catalog that was in effect when you became an OU student and/or
an ITS major (unless it is more than 5 years old). As before, you can elect to switch to a new catalog
(the semester one in this case). The course listings below
compare the quarter and semester versions of the ITS major, and
the way in which courses equate to each other, subject to final
approval by the University. The suggestions for degree completion
make implicit assumptions about the catalog choice that makes the
most sense in a given situation.
- Hours Needed to Graduate
- Based on draft rules
published by the Q2S office, all credit hours will be converted to
semester equivalents (quarter hours are multiplies by 2/3). The
minimum number of hours to graduate will likely be the semester
requirement, 120 semester hours. Assuming all course requirements
are met, you could graduate with the equivalent of 180 quarter hours.
Equivalent Quarter and Semester Courses
Tier 1
ITS students should complete Tier 1 Math and English under
quarters. Junior composition can be completed under quarters or
semesters as appropriate.
| Component | Quarter | Semesters |
| 1E | Eng 151 (5) | Eng 1510 (3) |
| 1M | Math 113 (5) | Math 1200 (4) |
| 1J | any (4) | any (3) |
Tier 2
ITS Students are strongly encouraged to complete Tier 2 under
quarters. If you end up splitting Tier 2 into semesters, here are the
rules:
- The six areas are unchanged: 2AS, 2CP, 2FA, 2HL, 2NS, 2SS
- If you have at least 3 quarter hours in an area, it is
"covered"; if not, you need at least 2 semester hours in that
area.
- Take your Tier 2 quarter hours, and multiply by 2/3; that is the
number of semester Tier 2 credits you have. If that number of less
than 21, you need to take enough Tier 2 semester courses to reach 21.
Tier 3
ITS students receive Tier 3 credit for ITS 444 under quarters, and ITS
4440 under semesters; no special Tier 3 course is required.
ITS Courses
- Intro
- The quarter and semester intro classes are interchangeable.
- Tech Core
- ITS students should complete the
tech core classes under quarters or wait to start into the tech
core until semesters. However, a transitional version of ITS 308
will be taught in the fall semester of 2012 for students who only
miss that class out of the tech core.
- Policy Core
- ITS students should complete the
policy core classes under quarters or wait to start into the policy
core until semesters. However, a transitional version of ITS 304
will be taught in the fall semester of 2012 for students who took
ITS 302 and were unable to take ITS 304.
- Capstone
- The quarter and semester capstone classes are interchangeable.
- Electives
- ITS students with a mix of quarter and semester
electives should combine either 1 quarter elective with 2 semester
electives, or 3 quarter electives with 1 semester elective.
| Component | Quarter | Semesters |
| Intro | ITS 214 (4) | ITS 2140 (3) |

| Electives | 5 electives (20) | 3 electives (9) |
Required Non-ITS Courses
- Specific Requirements
- Most non-ITS required courses have one-to-one equivalents between
quarters are semesters. However, ITS students should either complete
the quarter-based pair of COMS classes (COMS 101 and 215), or take FIN
2020 under semesters.
- Area of Concentration
- ITS students with a mix of quarter and semester
AoC classes should combine either 1 quarter class with 3 semester
classes, 2 quarter classes with 2 semester classes, or 4 quarter classes with 1 semester class.
